Vaper's tongue - what it is and how to fix it

Have you ever had a moment when you have been vaping your favourite flavour e-juice and then all of a sudden just can’t taste it anymore? Or found that your tongue is a bit numb?

Vaper’s tongue happens to most of us. There’s nothing wrong with your tongue or taste buds, to start off with, so you don’t have to worry. Another, probably better, term to use is “flavour fatigue”.

Try to remember that vaper’s tongue is totally unpredictable. There are those who have been vaping for years and never experienced it, while someone new to vaping might feel the effects of flavour fatigue just days or weeks after switching to e-cigarettes.

Before you get too worried, you should know that it is not a medical or serious issue at all – there are some simple explanations as to why this could happen:

1. Quit Smoking

New vapers who recently stopped smoking cigarettes are prime candidates for vaper’s tongue. As we all probably know, smoking dulls your sense of taste, so when you start vaping your senses can get overwhelmed by the intensity of flavours, causing your taste buds to want to take a break for a while. This can happen several times as your body transitions to being a non-smoker.

2. Damaged taste buds

Eating a lot of spicy foods, smoking, infections, alcohol, extremely sour foods and some medications can damage your taste buds resulting in you not tasting your e-juice.

3. Dehydration

The process of vaping might dehydrate you. The solutions in e-liquid (PG or VG) attract and draw out moisture, which means not drinking enough water while vaping can dry out your mouth and a thin film could form on your tongue which acts like a shield that blocks flavoured e-liquid from reaching your taste buds.

4. Not Enough Variety

Everyone has their favourite flavour they want to vape all the time! However, too much of the same flavour can make your taste buds less sensitive to that particular flavour. Try mixing some new flavours here.

5. Colds or Allergies

When you get sick, often the first thing you lose is your sense of smell, which affects your taste buds. Having a cold or sinus issues make it almost impossible to taste anything – e-liquid flavours included.

6. Stress and anxiety

Anxiety can also cause tastes to change. And, strangely, you can experience changes in taste even when you do not think you are suffering from anxiety at the moment.

While we don’t know all the reasons why taste buds change when you are stressed, some causes include: breathing through your mouth – when you are suffering from anxiety, you tend to breathe through your mouth, which can lead to different tastes (possibly because it affects your salivary glands and the bacteria in your mouth) or acid reflux.

7. Aging E-liquid

As e-liquids age, flavours can degrade, sometimes leading to a peppery taste. In which case, you might not have a case of vaper’s tongue at all, but simply need to get some new e-juice!



1. Change your flavour

Simply change the flavour you are vaping, and return to your old flavour after a couple of weeks. Hopefully, it will then taste just as good as it used to!

2. Use a stronger flavour

It may also be an idea to abandon the more subtle vaping flavours, and use something a bit more down to earth and strong.

3. Drink water

Drinking water addresses two potential problems of vaping: it clears the palette, and also helps to rehydrate you.

4. Inhaling the smell of fresh coffee beans or sucking on a lemon

This is a technique used by professional wine tasters and perfume samplers. While I bet most of us has no idea how it works, these experts believe that inhaling the scent of fresh coffee beans “resets” your senses.
A number of vapers have mentioned this has been a solution for their vaper’s tongue, so why not?!

Like coffee beans, sucking on a lemon is supposed to reset your taste buds and palette as well.

5. Allow time

Damaged taste buds can take up to two weeks to recover. So give it a little time and you may find your tongue is back to normal!
